SMART SPORTS AND ABC 5 INTO BOXING IN A BIG WAY

SMART Sports and ABC 5 are getting into boxing in a big way with their first major venture “Bakbakan sa Sinulog” at the plush ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City on January 14.

While boxing has always been part of the celebrations during the Sinulog week this will be the first time that Smart Sports and ABC 5 will team up to present a blockbuster fight card headlined by two of the most promising young Filipino fighters who are world-rated, alongside some of the country’s most exciting amateur finds.

Undefeated 21 year old Milan “Melinyo” Melindo (19-0, 5 KO’s) who is ranked No.1 by the WBO, No. 3 by the WBA and IBF and No. 5 by the WBC in the minimum weight division will move up in weight to challenge 22 year old WBC Intercontinental Youth flyweight champion Anthony Villareal of the United States in the main event.

Negotiations are underway to get a top-class bantamweight to battle southpaw sensation AJ “Bazooka” Banal who is rated No. 5 by the IBF and the WBA and No. 7 by the IBF in the co-main event.

Smart has consistently sponsored the world title fights of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and bankrolled the “Yanig sa Taguig” fight card in which Pacquiao demolished Thailand’s Fahsan 3K Battery in four rounds to win the vacant WBC International super featherweight title before some 30,000 cheering fans at The Fort on December 11, 2004.

Pacquiao’s phenomenal achievements have inspired scores of young Filipinos to take up the sport and carve a name for themselves internationally and Melindo and Banal are among these promising youngsters.

The decision of Smart Sports and ABC 5 to venture into presenting big time fight cards featuring world class Filipino fighters on a regular basis is certain to provide an added incentive to young fighters.

Their innovative approach of featuring professional and amateur fighters on the same card is bound to help develop a roster of amateur standouts for the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines under its Chairman, the eminent businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan and its president Ricky Vargas, a key executive of PLDT-Smart.

NIETES PREPARES FOR 4TH TITLE DEFENSE JAN. 23

WBO minimumweight world champ Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will be making his fourth title defense against Ivan 'Polito' Meneses of Mexico on January 23, 2010 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City. Nietes (25W (14 KO's)-1L -3 D) is now entering his second month of training at the ALA Gym in Nasipit, Talamban, Cebu City.

The champ trains six days a week and spars three times a week. He has sparred with Rocky Fuentes, Milan Melindo and Marjun Yap. Nietes does his morning roadwork running up the Busay Hills of Cebu. He also does sprints inside the ALA Gym. He has already seen fight films of Meneses and is very confident that he can beat the Mexican challenger.

“He is taller but I have sparred with Marjun Yap who is just as tall and even faster and stronger.” Nietes said.

Nietes holds the singular distinction of having back to back successful title defenses in Mexico this year against Mexican challengers Erik Ramirez and Manuel Vargas. It will take a very long time before another Filipino boxer can equal such a feat.

Meneses (14-5-1, 8KO's) fought only once outside of Mexico in October 2008 and lost to Adrian Hernandez by 10 round UD in Italy. Meneses has previously won the WBC FECARBOX minimumweight and WBO Latino minimumweight titles.

Nietes won the vacant WBO title last September 30, 2007 with a 12 round unanimous decision win over Thailand's Pornsawan Porpramook in a fight held at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City. Nietes will continue his training through the holiday season as it is the practice in the ALA Gym that their boxers only go home after their fight. But the 27 year old six year pro knows what he has to do. He is a champion who is not about to relinquish his crown anytime soon.

GORRES WATCH: SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT CONTINUE

Z Gorres’ post-op neurologic status continues to improve three days after the tragic aftermath of his points victory against Luis Melendez of Colombia. ALA Promotions patriarch Antonio Aldeguer has been getting regular updates from his son Michael who is with Gorres in Las Vegas.
As of 2:30 pm Nov. 16 Las Vegas time (6:30 am November 17 Phil. Time) Z made a thumbs up sign on his right hand to trainer Edito Villamor when asked and open his left eye a bit to him.

As of 8pm, Nov 16, Vegas time, ( Nov. 17 12 noon Phil. Time ) Gorres was able to follow commands. He opened his eyes on his own a few times. He is able to move both of his legs on command. He moves his left arm when given painful stimuli. His neck collar has been taken off since he has been cleared from neck injuries.

Gorres suffered a knockdown late in the final round in a fight that he was clearly winning. He collapsed after the verdict was announced and underwent brain surgery to relieve pressure brought about by a blood clot on the left side of his brain.

Gorres may not be able to fight again but what is important to his wife and four children is that they will be able to see him again and spend the Christmas season together.

The ALA Promotions staff requests all Filipinos to please continue to pray for him.

Gorres beats Melendez by decision but collapses post fight

By Ace Freeman (13-Nov-2009)

Round 1: Both fighters trading shots in the center of the ring. Gorres using excellent angles and popping his jab well. Melendez using his hight and reach well.

Round 2: Gorres back to jabbing. Lands a good combo that backs Melendez to the ropes. Gorres finds success with the straight left and mixes in a few good body shots. Melendez rocked with a big uppercut in the closing moments of the round.

Round 3: Melendez starts out the round with some aggressive pressure. Gorres finding range with his straight left. In the final moments of the round Gorres lands a blistering combination and shakes Melendez. A hard left hand drops Melendez. He is hurt but survives the round.

Round 4: Gorres goes back to boxing and Melendez takes time to move and recover. Another round for Z.

Round 5: Gorres’ jab is controlling the action. Melendez has his wits back but he’s being out-boxed. Gorres uses good movement to thwart Melendez’s aggression and continues to time his left hand well.

Round 6: Gorres beginning to land more punches in bunches. Melendez taking the shots well but he looks to be wearing down. Gorres very sharp with his counter punches and landing his uppercut well. Gorres using good defense to keep out of the line of fire.

Round 7: Gorres goes back to jabbing. Rocks Melendez one minute in to the round. Z’s jab is busting his man up. Very good display of ring generalship.

Round 8: More of the same. Gorres jabbing and using angles well. Melendez showing good determination but he’s outgunned. Gorres too sharp and too accurate. Z continues landing excellent shots to the body. Melendez trots forward but Gorres’ defense and movement gives him little to work with.

Round 9: Gorres following up the jab with the straight left, throwing it straight down the pipe. Most of the action is in the center of the ring where Gorres has the advantage in speed and skill. Melendez rallies late but it’s too little too late.

Round 10: Melendez goes for broke in the final round but Z is up to task. A low blow by Melendez pauses the action but Z is unfazed. With the fight in the bag Gorres boxes well and continues pumping the jab that has served hims so well. SHOCKER: In the fnal moments of the round Melendez rocks Gorrez and drops him hard. Gorres survies the last ten seconds of the round to seal the deal. Decision coming up…

Final Decision: Gorres wins a unanimous decision 98-90 (x2) and 97-91.

Note: Gorres collapsed in the corner post fight and was taken out on a stretcher. Our thoughts are with him and his family as he goes to the hospital for observation.

Melligen ready for Nov. 13 fight vs Rosales

NEGRENSE boxer Mark Jason Melligen of Barangay Pahanocoy Bacolod City said he is all set for his November 13 scheduled fight against Michael Rosales of Mexico in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Speaking before Manila newsmen via long distance telephone Monday, the 2005 Southeast Asian Games silver medalist said he has done everything needed during his training to win his upcoming fight

“I have suffered a lot and sacrificed a lot during training in preparation for this fight and I will not allow myself to be frustrated,” said Melligen in Filipino.

Melligen, one of four boxers in the family, said he will dedicate his fight to the people of Barangay 19 who suffered from the November 1 blaze that claimed the lives of 17 persons and destroyed more than 50 houses.

Earlier, former World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight champion Gerry Peñalosa of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental and reigning WBO minimumweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes of Murcia, Negros Occidental and Barangay Granada, Bacolod City both expressed optimism that Melligen will triumph in this fight against the lanky Rosales.

Asked what he intends to do against Rosales who enjoys both height and reach advantage over him, Melligen refused to comment except to ask that people watch his fight and pray for him. “Sana ipagdasal ako ng mga kababayan ko lalo na yung mga taga Bacolod. (I hope my countrymen will pray for me especially my fans in Bacolod),” Melligen said.

Melligen is a former amateur standout of the Negros Amateur Boxing Association (Naba) headed by former Bacolod councilor and now Games and Amusement Board (GAB) commissioner Juan Ramon “Monju” Guanzon. He was among the Naba products who were recipients of the development program forged between Naba and the famous ALA Gym of renowned international promoter Antonio “Bidoy” Aldeguer in Cebu City. Q & A with Milan Melindo

The top prospect currently in Boxing’s smallest weight class is Filipino Milan Melindo 19-0(5). Melindo is just 21 and already holds a win over former World champion Mohammed Rachman who was vastly more experienced but Melindo still won a unanimous decision. He trains with one of the current Strawweight world champions WBO ruler Donnie Nietes at the famed ALA gym other gym mates include Z Gorres, Mark Melligan, & A J Banal. While The Strawweight division doesn’t get much attention it still produces good pro and Melindo may one day be the best Strawweight in the world.

Hello Milan, welcome to 15rounds.com

Hi to 15rounds.com

Anson Wainwright - Firstly congratulations on your recent win over Guadalupe Martinez. What can you tell us about this fight?

Milan Melindo - Thank you very much, Sir! As for my fight against Guadalupe Martinez I would say it is one of the toughest fight I had been into, it was not an easy fight. Martinez is a hard puncher with excellent ability and he is a knock-out artist and he was prepared.

I am happy to have that fight against tough fighter like Martinez because I gain more experience.

Anson Wainwright - Your rated in the top five by all four governing bodies, what way to a world title are you looking to go?

Milan Melindo -Yeah, I am in top five world rating of 4 governing bodies (WBA, WBO, IBF and WBC). With all the hard work in training I am happy that I have been noticed already. For a world title- I am waiting for any opportunity and it depends on my manager. My manager knows when would be the best time for me to shoot for the world title.

Anson Wainwright - How far from a title shot do you think you are?

Milan Melindo -Maybe a year, it depends on my manager.

Anson Wainwright - You won against Muhammad Rachman who is a former world champion with a lot of experience. What can you tell us about that fight and what your learnt from it?

Milan Melindo -Muhammad Rahman is a good veteran boxer and I learned a lot from that fight with him. That was not an easy fight too, I guess I have outpointed him because I am a thinking fighter.

Anson Wainwright - Though the Straw weight division isn’t that popular on a world scene there are several top fighters plying there trade there at the moment what do you think of WBC Oleydong Sithsamerchai WBA Roman Gonzalez WBO Donnie Nietes IBF Raul Garcia?

Milan Melindo -In our weight category , I am willing to face the WBC champion-Oleydong; WBA Roman Gonzalez and IBF Raul Garcia but I can’t fight my stablemate WBO Champion Donnie Nietes. I highly –respect “The Champ”, Donnie Nietes.

But as for the time when to fight for a world title it will depend on my manager. He know what’s best for me.

Anson Wainwright - Can you tell us about your life away from Boxing?

Milan Melindo -Hmmm. My life away from boxing is same with other 21 year old guys… I love to play basketball, billiard too and of course I love to play computer games- “Strategy game”.

Anson Wainwright - Growing up in the Philippines were times hard and how did you get into Boxing?

Milan Melindo -It was my father who likes boxing in fact he bought a pair of boxing gloves. When I was 6 years of age my father train and introduce me to the sport of boxing. Growing up at first I took boxing as a hobby because it was through this sport of boxing I was able to continue my study through a scholarship program. When I graduated high school- I decided to take the sports of boxing seriously to help my family’s financial needs.

Anson Wainwright - The Philippines is a poor country and Manny Pacquiao is giving your people much to cheer about. As a Filipino what can you tell us about the influence Manny has on you and your country?

Milan Melindo -I am very proud to be a Filipino because of Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao had opened more doors and opportunities for us Filipino boxers to fight abroad. I am proud of him and I am proud to be a Filipino.

Anson Wainwright - What can you tell us about ALA gym? It has a very good reputation around the world.

Milan Melindo -ALA Gym is a very excellent gym in the Philippines. For me, if you wish to be the best boxer and wishes to be a world champion someday. ALA Gym is best place to be. Why I would say so- because ALA Gym is known of it’s good reputation that is a fact and how they handle, train and treat their boxers on it’s unique way. Unique way – because they treat you as part of the family and as a son. The best part to be with ALA gym they teaches you especially Sir ALA the facts of life. I am proud and happy to be part of ALA Gym.

Anson Wainwright - Finally do you have a message for your fans?

Milan Melindo -To all the fans of boxing and to all my fans, thank you very much for all the support and prayers. I hope you will continue to pray and support me and the sports of boxing as a whole. Thank you, thank you, thank you very much!

Thanks for your time Milan

Best Wishes

GORRES, MELLIGEN WORKING HARD IN LA AND VEGAS

By Salven L. Lagumbay
PhilBoxing.com
Wed, 21 Oct 2009

Both Z "The Dream" Gorres and Mark Jason Melligen, two of the top fighters at the ALA Gym, have continued showing solid work ethic while preparing at their respective gyms in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Gorres, who is working out at the Wild Card Gym in LA under the watchful eyes of trainer Edito Villamor, has slowly but surely shaken off the jetlag after a 13-hour trip from the Philippines the other day, and is scheduled to spar starting tomorrow according to his trainer.

Gorres will take on Colombian Luis Melendez at the House of Blues inside the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Nov. 13, the even of the huge Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto bout.

Melendez was the same fighter who knocked down Fernando Montiel before getting knocked out himself in the final round of their bout back in 2007.

Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, Mark Jason Melligen continues to put in the needed work as he prepares for Mexican Michel Rosales on the same card with Gorres.

"I have been training at the Mayweather Gym, and sparring against a guy named Nick and Timothy," informed Melligen, who is assisted in Vegas by trainers Edmund Villamor and Tony Martin.

The Bacolod City-raised Melligen is now solely training at the Mayweather Gym following the closure of Bob Arum's Top Rank Gym.

Melligen prepares for big break

MARK Jason Melligen is going to fight one of the toughest fights of his boxing career as he faces Mexican Michel Rosales on Nov. 13, the eve of the Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto war, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Melligen has been working exceptionally hard at the Roger Mayweather’s Gym for his fourth battle in the US, because he knows how vital this is to the future of his career.

“He’s working very hard. This is a big break for him. He knows how important this fight is. Top Rank has big plans for Melligen,” said ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer.

Melligen’s fight isn’t a walk in the park because Rosales is a formidable foe who can pack a punch. He holds a 24-3 win-loss record with 21 knockouts.

The 26-year-old Rosales’ three defeats came from top caliber welterweights—highly-ranked welterweight Saul Alvarez (29-0-1, 22 KOs), world-rated fighter Jesus Soto Karass and undefeated American boxer Mike Alvarado (26-0, 18 KOs).

“He’s doing very well. He has been sparring with Ramon Montano. He’s looking very sharp,” said Aldeguer.

The 23-year-old Melligen was originally slated to fight Rosales last Aug. 15, in Top Rank’s “Pinoy Power 2” boxing extravaganza. However, Rosales was replaced at the last minute by veteran journeyman Ernesto Zepeda because Rosales failed to acquire a visa.

ALA BOXERS MELINDO, DOMINGO WIN IMPRESSIVELY

Two of the most promising fighters in the famed ALA Gym of boxing patron Tony Aldeguer lived up to his expectations with impressive victories in the “Battle by the Bay: First Strike” at the Cuneta Astrodome late Saturday.

Fight fans who braved the stormy weather were not disappointed as the ALA fighters Milan Melindo and Michael Domingo showed their skill, punching power and courage against tough and worthy opponents.

Undefeated 21 year old minimum weight Melindo who is rated No.1 by the WBO, No. 3 by the WBA and the IBF and No. 5 by the WBC overcame Mexico’s rugged KO artist Guadalupe Martinez in an action-packed battle to score a unanimous ten round decision to keep his unbeaten record at 19-0 with 5 knockouts. Martinez whose original record was published as 7-1-1 with 7 KO’s reportedly paraded a record of 19-2 with 7 knockouts.

Whatever his real record Martinez proved to be a typical Mexican ring warrior especially after Melindo opened up a cut above his forehead in the fifth round. Martinez refused to back off even with blood streaming down his face and went after Melindo who used his classic counter-punching skills to stymie Martinez with precise punches to the body and head.

All three judges scored the fight for Melindo with two judges turning in cards of 97-93 and the third 96-94.

Domingo whom trainer Freddie Roach once regarded as a certain Filipino world champion and whose progress was setback after he was found to have hepatitis “B” prior to a major fight in the US has since been cleared and has picked off from where he left off.

Domingo who won the vacant WBO Oriental bantamweight title with a smashing 2nd round knockout over rugged Indonesian Rivo Rengkung on July 26, 2008 and followed it up with a 9th round TKO of former world champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on September 4, 2008 scored a smashing 8th round TKO over former US Olympian Jose Navarro.

The 28 year old American southpaw who fought for the world super flyweight title four times and lost was no match for the crafty Domingo who nailed him with cracking rights all night long and opened up cuts on the left side of Navarro’s face while a huge welt developed over his left eye.

The ring physician took a look at Navarro in-between the seventh and eighth rounds and ruled that Navarro was in no condition to continue.

With the win Domingo who is ranked No. 6 by the IBF improved to 39-14-2 with 17 knockouts while Navarro dropped to 26-5 with 12 knockouts.

Navarro was coming off a split decision loss to Cristian Mijares last February 16, 2008 and appeared a little rusty because of the long layoff. However, it tok nothing away from the quality of Domingo’s performance.

Tony Aldeguer told www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that they “knew Navarro’s style very well because Z Gorres had sparred with him at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach in Los Angeles several times in the past and we were well prepared” even though he too admitted that Navarro did look a little rusty.

Aldeguer’s son Michael who has taken over as president of  ALA Promotions told us on his return to Cebu that the Melindo fight was “one of the best fights I have ever seen. Martinez really came to fight and Melindo admitted he punched really hard” but added that the Filipino’s “fighting heart and determination to win prevailed.”

ALA BOYS TAKE METRO MANILA BY STORM

ALA fighter Michael Domingo and Milan Melindo scored impressive wins in the undercard. Domingo beat former US Olympian Jose Navarro by TKO in the 8th round, making him the first man to stop the four-time world title challenger. Domingo’s defense was solid, showing his opponent only the top of his head. The southpaw Navarro was eating right hands from Domingo all night and cuts were inflicted on the left side of his face. Navarro then had a huge hematoma forming above his left eyelid. The ring physician was called in between the seventh and eighth round. With the stoppage win, Domingo should go up the rankings and be in line for bigger fights and a possible bantamweight title shot.

The undefeated Milan Milendo once again showcased his world-class quality with a unanimous decision victory over tough Mexican Guadalupe Martinez. It was an exciting toe to toe battle. Melindo ( 19-0, 5 KO’s) opened a cut on Martinez’ forehead in the fifth. But with blood flowing on his face, Martinez attacked like a man possessed. But Melindo once again gave a clinic in precision boxing. Milan landed accurate punches to the body and head and effectively contained the Mexican’s aggression.

The scorecards read: 97-93, 97-93 and 96-94. Melindo is another future world titlist. He is highly ranked minimumweight in all organizations including the prestigious Ring magazine.

Another Filipino Al Sabaupan also defeated Josaphat Perez of Mexico by unanimous decision in a lightweight bout. The scores: 98-92, 96-94,97-93.

NIETES RETAINS CROWN, GORRES WINS BY TKO

By Dong Secuya

k

TEPIC, Nayarit -- WBO minimumweight champion Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes of the Philippines successfully defended his title winning by split decision over tough challenger Manuel 'Chango' Vargas of Jalisco, Mexico at the El Palenque de la Feria in front of rabid Mexican fans here. Two judges scored the bout 116-112, 118-110 for Nietes and a third judge had it 116-112 for Vargas. PhilBoxing.com had it 115-113 for Nietes.

After a feeling out first round, the fireworks started in the second round when Vargas takes the offensive, throwing bombs at Nietes which the sleek Filipino deftly defended. Exchanges in the third round saw both fighters hitting and receving at the same time that signals a very close contest ahead. The fourth round saw Nietes landed an overhand right that momentarily wobbled Vargas, but showing his Mexican heart, Vagas instead kept charging on. The remainder of the fight saw a charging Vargas trying to overpower Nietes but Nietes adopted a counter-punching stance that saw him landed more effective punches that got the nod of the two judges. Many of the rounds were difficult to score. A hard low blow by Vargas in the ninth round momentarily stopped the action for a few minutes as Nietes was trying to recuperate.

"By playing smart you won the fight tonight," promoter Sampson 'Picasso' Lewkowicz told Nietes after the fight.

A sellout crowd booed rabidly the decision but many Mexicans congratulated Nietes on the way out of the Arena.

"His punches are not the strong. Ramirez was much stronger," Nietes said after the fight. "But he's got good defense so I tried to time my punches."

Nietes has now successfully defended his title three times, two inside Mexican territory as he upped his record to 25-1-3 (14KO). Vargas dropped to 26-4-1 (11KO) and also lost his WBO Interim minimumweight title.

Gorres wins.

GORRES WON BY TKO

Bantamweight contender Z 'The Dream' Gorres won by 6th round TKO over rough Mexican Cruz Carbajal of Veracruz, Mexico. Carbajal refused to come out in the sixth round when he was massaging his left arm which appeared to be hurt. Gorres tagged Carbajal in the first round with an overhead right that wobbled the Mexican. A charging Carbajal cut Gorres in the right eye by a headbutt in the second round. The sleek punching Gorres tagged Carbajal with clean punches but couldn't put away his bull-strong opponent. Carbajal had his moments when he hit Gorres with right straights that appear to hurt Gorres on ocassions. What developed to be a good fight was cut short when Carbajal's corner refused to go out in the sixth round.

"My timing was a little bit off," Gorres said afterwards whose last fight was 7 months ago against Roberto Carlos Leyva at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. "It's really different when you haven't fought for a while. You are not as sharp as you want to be."

Gorres has now improved to 30-2-2 (17KO) and is looking to fight again on November 13 in Las Vegas.

In the main bout of the evening, the 'Son of a Legend' Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. (40-0-1 30KO) of Culiacan, Mexico, finished off Jason LeHoullier (21-2-1, 8KO) of the United States at 2:42 of the first round with a barrage of punches. Chavez, Jr. is now targeting John Duddy next.

THE SNAKE ESCAPES: “AHAS” NIETES RETAINS TITLE VIA SPLIT DECISION IN MEXICO

Donnie “Ahas” Nietes defied the odds and conventional thinking and won by split decision over Mexican challenger Manuel “Chango” Vargas in Nayarit, Mexico.

It was a hard fought and close battle. There were moments when the title seemed to be slipping away from his hands. Champion or not, close fights are supposed to go to the hometown fighter.

Nietes used his jab and defense to fend off Vargas' early onslaught. But the challenger was relentless with his body attack. Vargas also managed to catch Nietes with good head shots as the fight wore on.

The fight was fought mostly at close quarters. It was Vargas who landed the harder shots. But Nietes continued to counter everything Vargas threw at him. This was now a battle of technical attrition and as to who wanted it more. A low blow in the ninth had Nietes hurt and halted the action.

Nietes must have felt his title slipping away at this point and staged a rally. The Snake of the ALA gym showed the heart of a champion. He outworked Vargas in the final two rounds and boxed behind an effective left jab.

The scorecards read – 116-112 Vargas and 116-110 and 118-110 for Nietes. I had it much closer but Nietes' late rally was the clincher. Together with stablemate Z Gorres who stopped veteran Cruz Carbajal in the 6th, they scored a rare twin victory in Mexico. The 27 year old Nietes’ record is now 25 W-1 L-3 D with 14 KO’s. This is his second straight win in Mexico and his third successful title defense.

He may not do anything spectacular but Nietes does a lot of things well. But the best thing he does is win.

Reporting from Las Vegas, ALA Gym chief trainer Edito Villamor has indicated that his ward Mark Jason Melligen has been preparing so hard for his upcoming fight on May 1 against Ramon Montano at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

According to Villamor, Melligen is now weigh-ing 147.5 lbs, and should not have a problem going down to the junior welterweight level which is the contract weight for the Montano fight.

Melligen has been training at the Mayweather Gym in Las Vegas under the guidance of both Villamor and long-time Cebu resident and now Vegas-based Tony Martin.

ALA nixes Mexican’s offer for Nietes vs. Vargas

Thursday, April 16, 2009
DONNIE “Ahas” Nietes’ handlers, ALA Promotions, turned down the initial offer of Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran for the World Boxing Organization mini flyweight king to fight interim WBO titleholder Manuel Vargas on May 16 in Mexico.
ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer refused the offer, which they received last Saturday, because they believe it was to Nietes’ disadvantage.
“We turned it down because the date was too close,” ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Nietes fought last Feb. 28 in Oaxaca, Mexico and won against Erik Ramirez via unanimous decision, while Vargas’ last battle was on Feb. 14, which he also won by unanimous decision.
ALA Promotions wants the fight to be held later either in the Philippines or in Mexico.
“We’re proposing the fight to be in June,” said Aldeguer.
The 26-year-old Nietes resumed light training in March and started his full training last April 1 at the ALA Gym.
Aldeguer is currently in Manila to continue his negotiation with ABS-CBN to bring Nietes’ world title defense here in the Philippines. (EKA)

Gorres primes up for shot at world title

Tuesday, April 14, 2009
ALA Gym star Z “The Dream” Gorres is drawing nearer to his much awaited world title shot and could get his shot this year.
“We’re going to give him one more fight before letting him fight for a world championship,” said ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu yesterday. “He can fight for a world title this year or early next year. At 27, he’s at the right age to fight for a world championship.”

ALA Promotions is targeting newly crowned interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight titleholder Fernando Montiel in a rematch.
Gorres, who lost to Montiel in 2007, is now ranked No. 2 in the WBO behind Eric Morel.
Gorres, who is also ranked in the IBF at No.11, broke the world ratings in the WBO after winning the WBO Oriental bantamweight title against former world champion Roberto Leyva last March 14 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City.
Gorres’ first world title match was against Montiel for the latter’s WBO super flyweight title in Cebu City in 2007. Gorres and lost in a controversial split decision.
ALA Promotions recently received an offer from a promoter in Dubai for Gorres to fight there. However the Cebu-based
promotional outfit prefers a fight in the US for the WBO Oriental bantamweight titlist.
“A promoter from Dubai made an offer for Z to fight in Dubai. It’s something that we’re open to but nothing’s definite yet,” said Aldeguer “It’s better if he fights in the US because that’s where big-time boxing is.”
If Gorres lands a fight in the US, Aldeguer wants first-rate opponents for the 27-year-old Cebuano warrior.
“We don’t want ordinary fights just to keep him busy. We’re looking for bigger fights,” said Aldeguer.

Banal to train under Roach

THIS year will be a defining one for promising ALA fighter AJ “Bazooka” Banal as it will determine if he is prepared for another world title shot.
Banal, who has had ups and downs in his young boxing career, will be sent to the US to hone his talent at the Wild Card
Gym under renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach.

Also set to leave for the US are ALA fighters Mark Jason Melligen, who will be fighting on May 1 in Las Vegas against Ramon Montano, and Z Gorres.
Gorres will be sent to the US in June.
“This will be a deciding year for AJ because it will set the direction where he will be in the years to come. Fighting for a world championship will depend on his performance this year,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
ALA Promotions is planning to send the 20-year-old Cebuano to the US in May, after the Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton fight.
Aldeguer has high hopes that Banal will become a better fighter under Roach.
“Freddie can help enhance Banal’s skills and can develop him into the fighter that we hope he becomes,” he said.
The Cebuano promoter said their main purpose of sending Banal to the US is to improve the mental aspect of his game.
“He needs to develop mentally and training there will help him a lot. He can spar with a variety of partners from different weight classes and nationalities,” said Aldeguer.
Aldeguer said Banal has grown a lot and has gotten over his first professional loss to Rafael Concepcion.
“He has matured a lot. He understands the whole picture and has gotten over with what happened to him,” Aldeguer said.
Banal lost to Concepcion last July 26 by knockout in front of his own crowd at the Cebu Coliseum.
ALA Promotions is planning to give Banal one more fight in the Philippines before he gets to fight abroad.
“We will have him fight former world champions or world title contenders,” said Aldeguer.
ALA Promotions has targeted former world champions Chatchai Sasakul (65-4, 40 KOs) and Kermin Guardia (37-9, 21 KOs) for their ward. (EKA)

WILL IT BE DREAM COME TRUE FOR Z GORRES?

PhilBoxing.com
19 Mar 2009

Z “The Dream” Gorres had shown world championship caliber when he castigated Roberto “Mako” Leyva en route to a seventh round stoppage when the Mexican’s corner threw in the towel. He won the World Boxing Organization Oriental bantamweight title in his remarkable first fight in the division.

Consistently destructive for the opponent from start to finish, Gorres felt comfortable in the 118-lb. division and improved his pro record to 29-2-2 with 16 KOs. Leyva, on the other hand, skidded to 25-9-1 with 20 stoppages.

Michael Aldeguer wants Gorres to fight in the United States after the remarkable performance last bout. He said Gorres’ rating will improve in the WBO and a possible rematch with Fernando Montiel might be realized this year or next year. Coincidentally, Montiel has also moved up to the bantamweight division.

On February 24, 2007, Gorres got an attempt for a world title where he challenged WBO super flyweight champion Montiel at the Cebu City Sports Complex. During the bout, Gorres was deducted a point twice, one in the 10th and another in the 12th round, for holding his opponent. Montiel won the fight and defended the title in a controversial split decision. The decision could have gone differently if not for the dubious deductions.

If he hurdles Montiel successfully, a title shot is in sight. The WBA bantamweight champion is Panamian Anselmo Moreno and the WBC champion in the same class is Japanese Hozumi Hasegawa.

The IBF champion is Ghanian Joseph Agbeko. Meanwhile, the IBF champion is our very own Gerry Penalosa. The Ring bantamweight title is vacant. Gorres could face any of these champions, except perhaps countryman Penalosa.

“I had the advantage in the fight because I could see his punches since he was not very quick,” said the 26-year-old Gorres referring to Leyva, a former IBF minimumweight champion.

The southpaw Gorres landed with his effective jabs and hooks on the Mexican and had an effective defense to Leyva’s counterpunches. Aside from being an aggressor, Gorres is also a defense specialist and is very clever in avoiding himself to get hurt by his opponent. He relied also on his excellent footwork and his speed to tire the opponent.

Aldeguer confided that Gorres looked very comfortable at the bantamweight division. He was extremely aggressive and never lost steam. When he forced himself to fight at jr. bantamweight he was often dehydrated due to extreme weight reduction.

Gorres is still ranked at the jr. bantamweight class by the prestigious Ring Magazine and he has moved up to the No. 5 position from No. 6 last week as of March 15, 2009.

Melligen to face Pacquiao’s ex-sparmate in Las Vegas card

FOLLOWING an impressive debut in the US, Top Rank Promotions has shown interest in ALA boy Mark Jason Melligen and has set him up with a fight against former Manny Pacquiao sparring mate Ramon Montano.
Top Rank Promotions is looking for a young prospect and Melligen is on their radar.

To further evaluate the young junior welterweight’s talent, Bob Arum’s famed promotional outfit will be putting Melligen in a boxing event on the eve of the Pacquiao-Haton mammoth battle against a credible opponent.
“Top Rank is serious about Melligen. They were impressed with his last fight,” ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer, who handles Melligen, told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Aldeguer said this is Melligen’s most daunting task yet because this fight could determine if he has what it takes to excel in the US.
“This will be the biggest test for Melligen. Montanto is a good opponent for Melligen because he has faced named fighters. With this fight we will be able to have a really good evaluation of him,” said Aldeguer.
The US-based Mexican Montano has 17 victories, six defeats and two draws with two knockouts and has never been stopped in his six-year professional career.
He has faced former world champion David Diaz in 2008 but lost via a majority decision and also figured in a draw with undefeated World Boxing Association number three ranked fighter Dimitri Salita in 2006

'Boom Boom' out of action for six months after wrist operation
03/18/2009 | 05:00 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxing prospect Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista will be out of action for the next six months.

The 22-year-old fighter of the famed ALA boxing gym in Cebu recently underwent operation on his left wrist that is expected to sideline him for the next two quarters of the year.

ALA boxing stable president Michael Aldeguer said the operation had to be done now before the injury gets serious.

“His hurting left wrist has been the reason why Boom Boom had not been fighting the way he used to in the past," said the son of boxing patron Tony Aldeguer.

“Now that the operation is over, hintayin na lang mag-heal yan and then konting pahinga before he climbs the ring again," the young Aldeguer added.

The native of Tagbilaran, Bohol last fought in November when he scored a unanimous eight-round decision win over Heriberto Ruiz in the undercard of the Ricky Hatton-Paul Malignaggi 12-round fight in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bautista has been on a comeback trail following the disappointing first round knockout he suffered at the hands of Daniel Ponce De Leon in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title fight in 2007 in Sacramento, California. The loss was the first professional setback for the Filipino.

MELINDO NOW RING NO. 5 STRAWWEIGHT CONTENDER

Milan “Milenyo” Melindo barged into The Ring Magazine ratings from out of nowhere to No. 5 in the latest rankings as of March 15, 2009. He earned this when he won by a unanimous decision against former IBF mini-flyweight champion Muhammad Rachman.

Melindo is also ranked No. 1 by the WBO, NO. 4 by the WBA, and No. 6 by the WBC. It showed that the ALA fighter has been transformed into a world class contender.

The Indonesian veteran slid down to No.6 ranking from No.5 now occupied by the Cebu-based Cagayan de oro City fighter. Melindo improved his professional record to 18-0-0 with 5 KOs, while Rachman dropped to 62-7-5 with 31 KOs.

Still young and very promising, the 21-year-old Melindo used his incredible speed and his wide range of punches to convince the judges unanimously, 97-93, 98-92 and 96-94. At the start, it looked like the 37-year-old veteran gave the confrontation he promised, as he indicated earlier that this was just a tune-up fight for him.

But the undefeated Melindo proved why he is now a world rated challenger and showed a big heart and sheer determination by outclassing Rachman in the later rounds. Both boxers gave the audience the bruising fight they wanted and in the end it showed that youth prevailed over experience.

Melindo is also the reigning WBO Asia-Pacific and WBA Intercontinental mini-flyweight champion. He proved that fighting a very strong opponent only brought out the best in him. He outclassed the fighter 16 years his senior in the later rounds to get the nod of all the judges.

Michael Aldeguer believed that the fight was a tough test for Melindo because Rachman was an experienced and durable fighter. But his boxer devotedly followed the game plan and emerged successful at the end.

Aldeguer wanted Melindo to face a Mexican opponent in his next fight. He added it will take three or four big fights for Melindo before he would take a crack at the world title.

While The Ring Magazine strawweight champion remained vacant, Roman Gonzales of Nicaragua, the WBA champion, stayed at No.1 followed by Raul Garcia of Mexico, the IBF champion, at No. 2. Oleydong Sitsamerchai of Thailand, the WBC champion, kept hold of No. 3 and so did Filipino Florante Condes at No. 4.

Katsunari Takayama of Japan slid down to No. 7 while Donnie Nietes, the WBO champion, slipped to No. 8. Nkosinathi Joyi of South Africa became No. 9 and Juan Palacios of Nicaragua remained at No. 10.

Gorres Stops Leyva, Melindo beats Rachman

Z “The Dream” Gorres delivered another one-sided masterpiece and won the vacant WBO Oriental Bantamweight title with a 7th round TKO win over Mexican Roberto “Mako” Leyva.

The southpaw Gorres landed with his right jab and hooks and effectively parried and slipped Leyva’s counters. The Mexican tried to mount an offensive but Gorres showed excellent lateral movement and landed solid one-two combinations to the head and body. At the end of the fourth round, a furious barrage by Gorres had his opponent reeling on the ropes. He gave Leyva a mean stare at the end of the round.

The lop-sided hammering continued until referee Bruce McTavish stopped the fight at 1:29 seconds of the 7th.

Milan Melindo and Muhammad Rachman battled for ten exciting rounds that showcased the best that both fighters had to offer. Melindo pressed in the early rounds and landed effective combinations to the body and head. Rachman was able to take his punches and in the third round both boxers took turns leading and countering.

Rachman showed his ring smarts and guile in close quarter combat while Melindo was able to show his speed and combination punching when fighting at a distance. It was a bruising tactical battle. Both fighters refused to wilt under pressure. In the later rounds the 21 year old Melindo continued to land effective blows and managed to outlast the 37 year old former IBF world titlist. The bout ended with an exciting exchange of power shots at center ring. They hugged and carried each other as a sign of mutual respect.

The scores: 97-93, 98-92,96-94 all for Melindo.

What's next for ALA Boys?

Z (the Dream) Gorres beat Mexico’s Roberto Carlos Leyva into submission at 1:29 of the seventh round to claim the vacant WBO Oriental crown at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu last Saturday.

MANILA, Philippines - After scoring “statement” victories the other night, Z (the Dream) Gorres and Milan Melindo of Cebu’s fabled ALA (Antonio Lopez Aldeguer) stable are looking forward to bigger game as they come closer to clinching world title shots.
Gorres, 26, made an impressive debut as a bantamweight in blasting Mexico’s Roberto Carlos Leyva into submission at 1:29 of the seventh round to claim the vacant WBO Oriental crown at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu last Saturday. In the undercard, Melindo, 21. carved out a hard-fought unanimous 10-round decision over tough former IBF minimumweight titlist Muhammad Rachman of Indonesia.
Aldeguer admitted he got worried in the middle rounds when Rachman, 37, started to take control and Melindo looked like he was running out of gas. But Melindo later explained it was all part of his plan.
“Melindo is a thinking fighter,” said Aldeguer. “Rachman likes to start slow and give his opponent some confidence in the first few rounds then when you let your guard down, he comes charging in. Melindo wanted to finish strong and that’s exactly what he did. Give Rachman credit. He may not be skillful but he’s smart, he irritates you, he takes away your advantage and he is very experienced.”
Aldeguer said the unbeaten Melindo is a proficient counterpuncher with fast hands and dizzying combinations but needs space to operate. Rachman narrowed the gap and crowded Melindo in the middle rounds to keep it close.
“Melindo had to adjust because Rachman didn’t give him room to throw his combinations,” said Aldeguer. “Rachman pushed Melindo to the limit. At the start, Rachman was favored in the heavy betting at ringside but in the later rounds, Melindo was the 10-7 choice. It was a popular decision and Rachman knew he lost.”
The judges had no difficulty picking the winner. Salven Lagumbay saw it 97-93, Noel Flores 98-92 and Edwin Barrientos 96-94, all for Melindo.
Aldeguer said he’ll bring in a Mexican for Melindo’s next fight.
“We’re not rushing him,” he went on. “We want to give him a variety of opponents. Melindo was impressive against Carlos Melo and Rachman but we want to test him some more. He’s about three to four fights away from challenging for a world title but he’s getting there.”
Aldeguer said since ALA’s Donnie Nietes is the WBO minimumweight champion, Melindo will look elsewhere for his title crack.
“Melindo can fight at 105 or 108,” he added. “We’ll take our time.”
Melindo is ranked No. 1 by the WBO, NO. 4 by the WBA and No. 6 by the WBC so he stood to lose his lofty ratings if Rachman won.
As for Gorres, Aldeguer said the Dream was dominant against Leyva, a former IBF minimumweight champion.
“He looked very comfortable at 118,” said Aldeguer. “He was aggressive and never lost steam. He forced himself to fight at 115 before and was often dehydrated. Against Leyva, he showed footwork and relied on his speed to give him his power.”
Aldeguer said he will arrange a US fight for Gorres before he challenges any of the bantamweight champions.
“Leyva was flat-footed and slow but was very dangerous because of his power,” said Aldeguer. “Gorres has always been a good defensive fighter so he knew what to do to avoid getting hit.”
Leyva, 29, never went down but didn’t take a single round as Gorres rained blows from all angles until the Mexican’s trainer Raul (Jibaro) Perez signaled for referee Bruce McTavish to call it a night.
“Gorres used to try to knock out his opponents and prove he’s not a boring fighter but he couldn’t do it consistently because that’s not his style,” said Aldeguer. “Now, he’s become an exciting fighter, very aggressive, going after his opponents because he’s more comfortable at his weight. Gorres looked big for a bantamweight and he showed he can still be quick.”

WORLD CHAMP NIETES BACK HOME (VIDEO INTERVIEW)

dennis PRINCIPE
Wednesday, 04 March 2009

HE may not be as popular as Manny Pacquiao but there is one thing world champion Donnie Nietes achieved what the Pacman still has to do in his illustrious career. That is to defend his crown right in his opponent’s territory.

Over the weekend Nietes kept his world minimum weight crown as he dropped Mexican challenger Erik Ramirez en route to a 12-round unanimous decision win held at the Auditorio Guelaguetza, Oaxaca, Mexico.

Wednesday morning Nietes arrived in the country without much fanfare, probably because other media entities have set a very high standard of covering only those that can match the magnitude of Pacquiao’s arrivals.

NIETES SILENCES HOMETOWN CROWD IN OAXACA, RETAINS TITLE

By Dr. Allan Recto

Oaxaca, Mexico -– In front of the challenger’s hometown crowd, at the Guelaguetza Auditorium in Oaxaca, Mexico, Donnie “Snakeman” Nietes - 23-1-3 (14 KO’s) showed he has what it takes to become a legitimate World Champion after defeating the fierce Mexican Eric Ramirez - 25-5-1 (19 KO’s).
Ramirez gave his all, fighting with his lion-heart, but the champ was too much for him last night.

Starting in the first round, Nietes sent Ramirez to the canvas, yet Ramirez survived the count. There was a slight delay when the challenger spit out his mouthpiece. Boxer AJ Banal in Nietes’ corner was using a timer who alerted main trainer Edmund Villamor that the round had lasted 4 minutes and 30 seconds. In the second round, he timed it again, lasting this round 3 minutes and 23 seconds. AJ notified the boxing commissioner after which the correct time was being done. Assistant trainer Jeremiah Quijano calmly told the team not to worry but to concentrate on the fight. All action packed rounds ensued including a 5th round rally by Nietes who sent the challenger down for the second time.

Despite the knockdown, Eric Ramirez fired several body shots while the Mexican crowd started chanting – “Eric, Eric, Eric”. He threw a number of combination shots, hitting some, then missing more. Nietes could not seem to get hurt.

Several of the fans were relatives, friends of the challenger who showed courage and stamina. Nietes boxed and weaved beautifully but rested a bit in rounds 7 and 8 to preserved his strength.

In the 9th round, Ramirez was hit by an overhand right of Nietes that sent him down again. He was able to go on with the fight. Still the crowd chanted – “Mexico-Mexico.”

Ramirez rallied again. The champion Nietes worked even harder but was caught by an overhand during the 12th round where his knees were bent a little bit then he hang on, causing the crowd to react, thinking Nietes got hurt.

He then raised his two fists up in the air urging Ramirez to come forward. He hit Ramirez with a right straight to the head sending him back to the floor for the fourth time in the night. The referee waved his hand, saying it’s all over but the commission said the bell had rang before the count finished the round. The referee admitted to us he didn’t hear the bell.

Donnie Nietes was declared the winner after a unanimous decision was called. Judges scorecard showed – John Stewart 113-111, Victor Salomon 115-109 and Cesar Ramos 116-108 – all in favor of the still WBO minimum weight champion Donnie Nietes.

Team Ramirez recognized the gallant effort of the champion Nietes and Promoter Nacho Huizar said “Congratulations to Nietes. He gave a good clean hard fight… good for Philippines but bad for Mexico.”

Indeed, there were no clashes of heads nor low blows.

Eric Ramirez stated, “I fought with my heart and threw a lot of punches but could not beat him. I respect him because he fought with his heart too and wanted to keep his title badly.”

The Champion Nietes added that, “Ramirez was a tough opponent and I tried my best to put him away but could not finish him. He is also durable. I am very glad I won convincingly. I thank everyone especially some Filipino fans who supported me.”

The fight in Oaxaca was truly thrilling. Media people and Mexican fight fans congratulated Nietes and showed their admiration. Some reportedly say they enjoyed watching him win in such an impressive fashion. ALA VP Dennis Canete was delighted and said, “I had informed Mr. Aldeguer immediately in the Philippines who was extremely pleased with the outcome. We are very proud of Donnie who defended his title tonight.”
