Filipino boxing fans are in for a treat this May, as S+A will be airing the upcoming IBF world light flyweight unification bout between Filipino boxing star Milan “El Metodico” Melindo of ALA Boxing Gym in Cebu and lineal champion Akira Yaegashi of Japan.
A household name in Filipino boxing, Melindo (35-2-0) rose to prominence through ALA Boxing’s Pinoy Pride series. Melindo holds notable wins against title contender Jose Alfredo Rodriguez, Saul Juarez, and has challenged for two world titles. Back in November of 2016, Melindo finally got his hands on world championship gold after outpointing Thailand’s Fahlan Sakkrereen Jr. to become the interim IBF world light flyweight champion.
Already a two-division world champion, Kitakami’s Yaegashi (25-5-0) has held world championship gold in the minimumweight division, and is a two-time world champion in the light flyweight division. After holding the WBC’s 108-pound title from 2013 to 2014, the 34-year old went after and won the IBF title from Javier Mendoza via unanimous decision in 2015. Since then, Yaegashi has defended the title twice.
Melindo and Yaegashi will battle for the right to be called the undisputed IBF world light flyweight king.
That matchup happens on Sunday, May 21st at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan.
