WBO world # 1 Flyweight Milan “El Metodico” Melindo defended his WBO International Flyweight title against visiting Venezuelan Jean Piero Perez in a cerebral fight game feature of Pinoy Pride XVI Venezuelan Invasion.

The ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports main event featured a tactical battle with Melindo playing the role of aggressor off the bat. Melindo caught Perez with a left hook to the temple late in the 1st round staggering the former world champion  and forcing him to hold on and be defensive making him survive Melindo’s attack. The Filipino continued to be aggressive and controlled the first half of the fight.

Sensing he was behind the visiting Venezuelan upped the action and showed he was the busier fighter after the 6th canto catching Melindo with jabs and short punches. It was evident though that Perez’s attacks were temporary as Melindo’s defense was far more superior than Perez’s offense.

In the championship rounds, Melindo leveled up to Perez in the action department and again found his measure landing jabs and well timed body shots getting 2 of the 3 judges nods for a majority decision win.

Judges Edward Ligas and Tony Pesons called the fight for Melindo with 116-112 and 115-113 scores respectively while Judge Salven Lagumbay saw it differently scoring it 114-114.

It was a sold-out Pinoy Pride XVI Venezuelan Invasion event for ALA Promotions who now looks forward to an exciting and bigger Pinoy Pride XVII Philippines vs The World mega boxing show at the SM MALL OF ASIA ARENA on October 20, 2012. This will be a triple championship event headlined by the WBO World Bantamweight Championship bwtween the world’s number 1 and 2 bantamweights AJ “Bazooka” Banal of the Philippines and Thailand’s Pungluang Sorsingyu.
