African, Mexican Boxers Not Backing Out of Pinoy Pride 9, Attending Media Day
ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports are proud to present foreign boxing prospects Shaabani “The Black Panther” Madilu from Kenya, Mario “Maca” Briones of Mexico, and his fellow countryman Ramon “Principe” Garcia Hirales.
They are scheduled for a media day today, October 4, at the SM City Bacolod. This will be the first part of their promotional campaign for the upcoming world championship in Negros Occidental—Pinoy Pride 9. The said event will be covered by no less than world-renowned media.
The tour will be led by Ramon “Principe” Garcia Hirales, a fighter who has had a history of two titles since 2009. In May 30 of the said year, he defeated Jose Luis Varela for the WBC International light flyweight title. After his second defense in February 2010 against Michael Arango, he sought the WBO World Light Flyweight championship and was a successful defender of the Interim title for three times before he was defeated by Jesus Geles in a split decision.
Both Latino fighters faced each other again on April 30 of this year for the full title, and Garcia knocked Geles to the canvas in the 4th round, an amazing victory after an agonizing defeat.
On the 8th of October, he is determined to defend his hard-earned title against Donnie “Ahas” Nietes. In fact, the Garcia Hirales camp sneaked into the country early and trained in Cebu in the past weeks to get used to the Philippine climate.
Also present today is Mario “Maca” Briones and African warrior Shaabani “The Black Panther” Madilu.
Briones is undefeated in 21 fights and 14 of his wins came by knockout. He is a very active fighter, with his upcoming match being his sixth this year. Before Pinoy Pride 9, he felled 4 out of 5 opponents to the canvas. And on October 8, the reigning WBC FECOMBOX Super Bantamweight champion will wrest the WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight belt from AJ “Bazooka” Banal.
Madilu, on the other hand, will be fighting outside the African continent for the first time in his boxing career. But before this opportunity to fight Villanueva, he ended three of his last six opponents in early rounds via knockout. Not only that, he was an eligible contender to the Tanzania Professional Boxing Commission Super Flyweight title. He currently ranks number 3 in his home country in the Flyweight division.
Villanueva currently suffers from a severe finger injury and will be replaced by Jason Pagara’s younger brother, “Prince” Albert. The injured Bacolod fighter is confined in the Corazon Locsin-Montelibano Memorial Hospital.
A second part of the foreign fighters’ promotional campaign will be set on the same venue.
